A Brief History of the McKay Library
The first official Library for Ricks College was located on the second floor of the Jacob Spori Building from 1903 to 1963.
As the College grew so did the need for a larger Administration area. In 1976 a new building was completed to the west of the existing McKay LRC and Library materials were moved into the new building. The old LRC became the home of the Ricks College Administrative offices and the two buildings were connected by a narrow two-story breezeway. Ten years later, in 1986, the name of the LRC was changed to the David O. McKay Library.
By 1999 the Spencer W. Kimball Student and Administrative Services Building was completed southeast of the Manwaring Center. All campus Administrative services were moved into that building and the original LRC building was remodeled once again to provide additional space for the Library. On June 21, 2000, Pres. Gordon B. Hinckley announced that the two-year Ricks College would become the four-year Brigham Young University-Idaho. Several months later the Library officially expanded into the east building, creating an east wing and a west wing, with five floors of material and resources to better serve the needs of the BYU-I community.
